Teenage Ippo Makunouchi puts forth a lot of effort to assist his mother in managing her fishing boat rental company while his father is away.
Ippo is easily targeted by persistent bullies who regularly leave him battered and injured. Ippo is taken to the Kamogawa Boxing Gym for recovery after a violent incident at school.
Ippo impresses the other boxers in a practice battle against prodigy Ichirou Miyata. He picks up a competitor in Miyata as well as a mentor in the shape of gym owner and former boxer Genji Kamogawa.
Ippo battles a slew of tough opponents, each more formidable than the last, as he embarks on his formal boxing career. Ippo has a cycle of hard training, triumph, and defeat ahead of him in his quest for greatness. With his strong physique and unwavering determination, the kind young guy aspires to conquer the world.
