Shazam! Fury of the Gods could have some of the worst opening weekend numbers in the history of the DC Extended Universe, according to new projections. According to Box Office Pro, the film will gross between $43 million and $52 million in its opening weekend and between $101 million and $13 million domestically overall.

In comparison to Shazam! From 2019, which took first place at the box office with $53.5 million in its opening weekend and went on to gross $140.5 million domestically, it would perform worse than this.

The only DCEU film Fury of the Gods is predicted to surpass, excluding the pandemic releases Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad, is Birds of Prey(2020), which earned $33 million in its first weekend and $84 million domestically.

The box office juggernaut Avengers: Endgame, which would go on to gross more than $800 million domestically, was noticeably released just four weeks after the first film.

Since it will release several weeks after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Fury of the Gods won’t face any significant competition from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it will be up against the eagerly anticipated John Wick: Chapter 4 and the kid-friendly Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Originally scheduled for release on December 21, 2022, the film was postponed to avoid vying for IMAX screens with Avatar: The Way of Water.

The future of Zachary Levi’s portrayal of the character in the new DC Universe may not look promising given this unfavourable prognosis.

Levi recently said that the destiny of Shazam will be decided by DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran based on the success of the next sequel. “I’m gonna sit down with James and Peter soon enough, and we’ll talk about what we think the trajectory of all this will be,” I’m sure, Levi remarked.

“The second movie’s success will determine a lot,” Grace One of the variables in Box Office Pro’s estimate—reports that some DC fans aren’t invested in Fury of the Gods because they believe the changes at DC will make it irrelevant—was recently addressed by Caroline Currey, who plays Mary Bromfield in the Shazam! Sequel.

She asserted that wherever there is change, people tend to assume the worst. “But there’s also the possibility that it could be the best-case scenario, and it could be really awesome, and Shazam! – the second one – you’ve got to remember it’s produced by Peter Safran, and he’s now running DC.”
